Discover the Importance of Surface TensionSurface tension is a key term to understand when it comes to organic chemistry. It simply states that water is a liquid and is held in the center of the glass as it tends to fall to the bottom of the container. Due to the liquid's solid nature, it tends to bead up at the surface of the liquid in the container when the surface tension of the liquid is reduced.Another thing to understand is that water can be described as being on the dry or wet side of the environment's surface tension. When water evaporates, it leaves a film of vapor that remains on the surface. This allows water molecules to evaporate from the water by spreading out and forming larger droplets. This all-important substance actually does this even with the solids present.This phenomenon is known as the hydrophobic properties of water. Water also has hydrogen bonds, which means that it has two hydrogen atoms surrounding the one oxygen atom. That means that each molecule of wate r has the potential to hold more than one atom of water molecules.This means that there are more bonds between the molecules and less in between them. With this property, the hydrophobic property, there is less interaction between water molecules and they tend to stick together more easily when they are in a liquid state. This interaction between molecules can be thought of as a weaker form of water's surface tension.As hydrophobic properties get weaker with time, they can become less effective in repulsing water molecules that are too close to each other. This is due to other changes taking place in the nature of the molecule. Changes such as breaking up and forming into molecules that include hydrophobic properties.Water molecules can actually develop smaller ones when there is too much force being applied to them. These are known as small water molecules, because they tend to have a smaller size than the larger molecules that have already been formed. When the larger molecules co me together, they tend to get stuck together, and then there is a decrease in the overall water molecules' surface tension.Thus, the term surface tension is used for a solid substance that is held in contact with the surface of a liquid by the molecules of water. This property is generally described as being close to the liquid's surface when there is too much force being applied to it. Therefore, surface tension is the reason that water molecules tend to stick together when they are at a liquid's surface, and it is also the reason that the mass of the water is typically less than the mass of the molecules.
